Conservation Seedlings

Each year the CD helps promote and distribute seedlings from the DNRC Montana Conservation Seedling Nursery. The seedlings must be used for a conservation project which include: windbreaks and shelterbelts, riparian habitat improvements, erosion control, living snow fences, reforestation, or wildlife habitat.

Orders are accepted through March of each year and seedlings are delivered in April to a location in Gallatin County (usually the fairgrounds).

Orders are filled on a first come basis and priority is given to landowners with 10 or more acres. The minimum order for new plantings is 250. Deciduous bare root tree and shrubs are sold in lots of 50.  Containerized are sold in lots of 25. Conifer seedlings are sold in lots of 25. Some species of both conifer and deciduous are sold in 100 cubic inch containers and must be ordered in lots of 8.

The seedlings are very reasonably priced and orders may be placed through the CD or directly with the nursery. The CD does offer ordering assistance by reviewing soil information and assist in selecting species for specific soils. The CD also offers windbreak recommendations and has general knowledge of all seedling species.
