Three members of the Gallatin Conservation District participated in the 2014 National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Annual Meeting, Feb. 2-5, 2014 in Anaheim, Calif. The meeting focused on the theme “Conservation: Locally Grown, Nationally Known,” and featured national-level speakers, an awards program, breakout sessions, tours, a Conservation Expo, and training opportunities.

The Gallatin Conservation District applied for the National Conservation Foundation/National Association of Conservation District’s President Award and was selected as one of three finalists. This competitive award was open to 3000 Conservation Districts nationwide and the Gallatin Conservation District was selected as the winner. They will receive $10,000 to go towards their outdoor natural resource Education and Outreach Center located in Manhattan, MT.

“We were greatly honored to accept this national award on behalf of the Gallatin Conservation District and re-energized in our efforts to deliver the conservation message,” stated Sherwin Leep, Supervisor.

Supervisor Jason Camp adds, “I never realized what an honor it was to be the recipient of the NCF/NACD President Award until attending the National Convention.  The Gallatin Conservation District has done a great job of helping preserve the natural resources in the valley and is highly deserving of the award.”

The 65’ x 140’ Center will feature a greenhouse, pollinator gardens, xeriscape yard, vegetable & herb community gardens, warm & cool season pasture grasses, rain garden, solar livestock water tank model, Montana wildflowers, pergola, and a watershed model. The District began work in June, 2013 and the Center is about 1/3 complete. “We are very grateful for the support and donations we have received to date,” stated Marcie Murnion, Administrator. “It is quite a privilege to receive this national award; your Montana conservation districts are doing worthy projects,” she added.

A special thank you to Byrhonda Lyons of NRCS for producing the video and to all the Montana folks for their support.
